Passions in Print

Discover New Mexico’s colorful fine printing tradition with Pamela Smith, former director of the Press at the Palace of the Governors.

Exploring the little-known but remarkably rich realm of private printing and publishing in the state, this slide lecture weaves the story of artists and writers who together produced some of the region’s best-known literary treasures. Handsomely crafted books from the 19th century through the present are featured in this lively account. A New Mexico Humanities Council Chautauqua program.

Pamela Smith established and directed the Museum of New Mexico’s Press at the Palace of the Governors, designing and printing award-winning limited edition letterpress books there for nearly thirty years. She curated “Lasting Impressions,” an exhibition of private press work now showing at the Palace of the Governors Museum and authored the book Passions in Print: Private Press Artistry in New Mexico, soon to be released from the Museum of New Mexico Press. She is presently an adjunct faculty member at the College of Santa Fe where she teaches classes in the book arts.
